Agroecology is one of the most advocated for practices by URBANET Ghana as part of its efforts to promote sustainable farming and restore good agronomic practices. For the past year, URBANET has engaged smallholder farmers, district agriculture departments and other stakeholders with an interest in agriculture and climate, on the significance of agroecology and its promotion amongst farming communities. Several interventions, including sensitisation, training on practices such as low tillage, substitution of chemical fertilisers with compost and biochar, integrated pest management techniques, and other safe and sustainable practices that aim at restoring soil health and reducing farming-related economic challenges.

To recognise the efforts of farmers who have embraced agroecology and are known to be championing its practice in their communities, this farmers’ day celebration, URBANET awarded several bags of organic compost to some farmers within the Tolon, Kumbungu and Central Gonja districts.

For this and subsequent years, URBANET is targeting most of its implementing areas to increase awareness of agroecology practices and take them on a journey of sustainable farming. In order to achieve this, URBANET is partnering with local, government and private stakeholders and partners to maximise coverage and intensify impact.
