Water they say is life, but that was not the case in Nangbagu a community in the Tolon District, with the community relying on the only dam in the community that often dries up easily, requiring more labour from the community, higher cost and time to desilt and sometimes dig deeper just to get access to water. A women’s group by the name “Nasara” composed of 32 members, and one of the three women groups under the WISE project in the Nangagu community have decided to use their social fund contribution to dig out a well that will benefit the community as a whole.

The Magazia of the group shared that, they previously had to share the old dam with cattle and queue for days sometimes sleeping there just to get water for their household needs and businesses. Nasara women’s group after receiving training on the WISE project VSLA+ methodology, learnt the benefits of the social fund. Hitherto, these women used to share the social fund, including during share-out. Thanks to the WISE Project, they were advised not to share the social fund.

So this year, after the share-out, these women agreed to use their social fund contribution of GHC 2,100.00 plus an additional contribution of GHC 2,000.00 to provide a well for their community. Previously, the community could only boast of one dam which was not enough for them. Nangbagu and its neighboring communities rely on this dam for their personal and business use. The Magaziya of the group had this to say

“With the old dam, we had a lot of challenges, with the dam often drying up during the dry season and having to share it with cattle. It was very difficult to have access to water in this community as we had to queue for hours and sometimes days to have access to water. This poses a challenge to our daily lives and businesses. So we the members of the Nasara women’s group decided to help curb this problem and empower ourselves by using our social fund contribution to dig out this well.”

The well currently caters for Nangbagu and neighboring communities such as Dingani, Gawagu, Kamonaayili and Kpasokpana.
